Workshop for Female Developers on GIS and Facebook Data for Good Datasets

Preneur Lab Youth and Innovation Trust and EMK Center together conducted “#BegumRokeyaSquad: Data Science Session,” a two-day workshop for women. The session lasted two days and was held at the EMK Center’s MakerLab. The workshop’s goal was to provide female professionals and developers with knowledge of “GIS and Facebook data for good datasets.”

A total of more than 70 people enrolled for the data science workshop. Finally, 15 people were chosen for the session based on their educational backgrounds, institutions, residence area, and other factors.

The first day of the session began at 10:30 a.m. on June 8, 2022. The session’s special speaker was Md. Ahasanul Hoque, Knowledge Management Expert, Gender-responsive Coastal Adaptation (GCA) Project, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The participants received instruction on the fundamentals of GIS, Facebook data for a decent dataset, maps, GPS and positioning systems, and so on on the first day. Finally, students were shown how to use the QGIS program.

The second session took place on June 9, 2022. Mr. Arif Nezami, Co-founder of Preneur Lab Youth and Innovation Trust, led the workshop on the second day. The participants were taught how to use the Weka data processing program. Ms. Sikder Rituparna introduced QGIS, a population measuring tool that leverages the Facebook Data for Good dataset. Mr. Mark Burrell, US State Department’s Regional Public Engagement Specialist (REPS) for South Asia, also attended the sessions and gave a speech that motivated the attendees.

Finally, as a token of their participation in the program, the participants got certificates.

Women should be included in this period of the fourth industrial revolution when the world is moving forward with new technology. This program was developed by Preneur Lab and EMK Center to teach and push women to pursue careers in the technology sector. These groups intend to host more of these types of events in the future.
